Snap-on snaps to it

Sixteen Snap-On Tool employees are committing their energy and time to making their lives better through health.
“Snap-on Tool has won several award for “LEAN manufacturing” as “Lighten-up” participants we plan on taking our “LEAN” knowledge to new levels,” said Linda Kollman.

The competition is fierce between the Cherokee County business community. Teams from Ace Hardware, Babcock Furniture, Moog, Murphy Medical Center, David Ritz Appalachian Land and the Hiawassee Valley Pool and Wellness Center may prove them wrong. Keep your eyes on this paper to see “Who’s the Biggest Loser”.

“Murphy Medical Center wants to lead the way to healthier lifestyle choices, which include a healthy diet of lean meats, fruits and vegetables, decreased high carbohydrate deserts, and daily exercise,” said Susi Brown MMC Community Health Nurse. “We want to encourage our citizens to "eat less and move more" everyday.  Find out your BMI, body mass index, and work towards your goal weight for your height and age.  Let's lose weight, not only for this Community "Lighten Up" challenge, but for Life!  Make the commitment today to maintain a healthy weight by making healthy choices for you and your loved ones"

Teams can join at any time during the eight week challenge by calling Sande Kimball at the Cherokee County Chamber office in Murphy (837-2242) or Susi Brown, MMC Community Health Nurse (835-3659) for more information.

Badcock has something to crow about

The “Cock-a-doodle-doo’s” of Badcock Furniture are getting healthier every day.  In four short weeks the Badcock team has lost over 30 pounds in their quest for health and fitness. “We are slimming down to serve you better”, said owner Tom Thomas.

But the Lighten-Up Community Challenge is only at the halfway mark, several teams are serious contender for being the “biggest losers. Watch out for the teams from Ritz Realty, Snap-On Tools, Cherokee Scout, Moog, Murphy Medical Center and the Hiawassee Valley Pool and Wellness Center.

Keep your eyes on this paper each week to see who’s the “Biggest Loser”.
"Obesity leads to Type 2 Diabetes and other Cardiac problems and is shortening the lifespan of many middle aged Americans,” said Susi Brown MMC Community Health Nurse.  “Murphy Medical Center wants to lead the way to healthier lifestyle choices, which include a healthy diet of lean meats, fruits and vegetables, decreased high carbohydrate deserts, and daily exercise. Murphy Medical Center kicked off its eight-week “Lighten Up” Challenge to the Cherokee County business community this past Friday. “Lighten Up” is a combination of exercise, healthy diet plan and education to help employees find their way to health.

The ten Murphy Medical Center teams have been put on serious notice by teams from six area businesses.  MOOG, Snap-On Tools, Badcock Furniture, Ace Hardware, Cherokee Scout and the Hiawassee Valley Pool and Wellness Center are all taking part in the challenge to be the “biggest losers” in Cherokee County.

“We are excited by the business community’s response to help their employees become healthy through a combination of exercise, diet, education and weight loss,” said Susi Brown, Murphy Medical Center’s Community Health Nurse.

The challenge is free and open to any business in the area. It is sponsored by Murphy Medical Center, the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce and the Cherokee Scout newspaper.  Teams can join at any time during the eight week challenge by calling Sande Kimball at the Chamber office in Murphy (837-2242) or Susi Brown, Community Health Nurse (835-3659) for more information. Participating teams will be profiled by the Cherokee Scout.

The four-member teams will win prizes based on the percentage of weight each team loses by September 20th.

The awards will be announced and presented at Murphy Medical Center’s “Two Hours from Anywhere” 5K Challenge and Heart Walk on Saturday, September 20, 2008.  The 2-mile walk begins at 9:00 a.m. and teams are enthusiastically encouraged to participate.  It will be a great way for your employees to celebrate their weight loss!  Entry forms are available from the Chamber of Commerce or Murphy Medical Center.

Ace Nuggets lose to win

The “Ace Nuggets” of Murphy Ace Hardware are well on their way to better health. “We not only give 20 percent off in our store, we are going to shed 20 percent off of our weight for the Lighten-Up Community Challenge” according to Manager Walter Cagney (far left) pictured with other “Ace Nuggets” team members, Sherry Martin  (in chair) and Dean Smith.  But who knows? There is some very tough competition out there in the Cherokee County business community. Teams from Snap-On Tools, Babcock Furniture, Moog, Murphy Medical Center and the Hiawassee Valley Pool and Wellness Center may prove them wrong.
